User Alerts:
User alert regarding Forest Type changes in FIADB 4.0
A number of changes have been made in FIADB 4.0 that affect forest type codes,
such as the addition of new forest types, regrouping of some the forest types, and reassignment of some species to
different stocking equations. Annual data will be reprocessed and some plots will be assigned a different forest type
classification than previous reported. A data conversion program was developed to modify various data items to make
them compliant with Field Guide 4.0. The program includes a translation of old forest type codes to new Version 4.0 codes.
The primary purpose of this program is to update periodic inventory data. However, until all the annual data can be
reprocessed in the compilation system (NIMS_CS 4.0), those data are being translated using the same conversion program.
Users are cautioned that the currently available translated annual data will yield different results than the reprocessed data;
the differences should be relatively small.
User Alert Regarding Biomass and Carbon Estimates
The program that estimates biomass using the Component Ratio Method
has been revised, causing changes to both biomass and carbon numbers
in the TREE table. The columns affected are DRYBIO_TOP, DRYBIO_STUMP,
DRYBIO_SAPLING, DRYBIO_WDLD_SPP, DRYBIO_BG, CARBON_AG, and CARBON_BG
for live and dead trees in the TREE table. Data has been reprocessed
and the table has been updated as of October 30, 2009. The impacts
are greatest at the tree level and will be noticeable in summary
tables that contain numerous categories or cells, such as species
by diameter class or forest type by owner. Large differences may
not be as conspicuous at more aggregated levels such as state or
county totals.
Biomass and carbon estimates using the CRM method are new in FIADB 4.0. Users
who are working with earlier versions of the data will not be impacted.
Documentation has been developed that explains the method and lists
each equation used in the compilation of CRM biomass. This information
has been added to the FIADB 4.0 User Guide.

FIDO DEMONSTRATION
On October 1, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) National Reporting and Data Distribution Team offered a webinar (hosted by NA S&PF) to demo FIDO (Forest Inventory Data Online), FIA's primary online tool, and EVALIDator, another of FIA's online tools.
A recording of the demo is available for viewing here.
