Net Volume of Softwood Sawtimber Trees on Timberland, 2007


This map shows the spatial distribution of the net volume of softwood sawtimber trees on timberland per county. Nationwide, the total is roughly 2.5 trillion board feet.

Use this map only to identify broad spatial trends. At the time of
assessment, data were not available for interior Alaska, the Pacific Basin, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and a small number of counties in the lower 48 states.

Timberland is defined as forest land capable of producing in excess of 20 cubic feet per acre per year and not legally withdrawn from timber production, with a minimum area classification of 1 acre.

Saw log is a log meeting minimum standards of diameter, length, and defect, including logs at least 8 feet long, sound and straight, and with a minimum diameter inside bark of 6 inches for softwoods and 8 inches for hardwoods, or meeting other combinations of size and defect specified by regional standards.

Board foot is a piece of lumber that is 1 foot wide, 1 foot long and 1 inch thick.
